Water heater basics every customer needs to know
Keep the area surrounding your water heater clear for service access material for air circulation by:
- Ensuring that no combustible, hazardous or flammable materials are used or stored in the same room or near the water heater;
- Ensuring that the water heater is not confined in a location where it is difficult to service or remove or where there is inadequate ventilation;
- Ensuring that the vents and openings are kept clear and clean and otherwise well maintained;
- Ensuring that the water heater is located in an area with sufficient drainage in the vicinity, and that the drainage is open and unrestricted;
- Ensuring that the floor drain is free of obstructions and that there is a clear water path between the water heater and the drain
- Avoid storing valuable items near your water heater
Bathroom
- Always test the water temperature before you enter the bath or shower
Children
- Supervise infants and small children around the faucet
Plumbing
- Watch for sudden increases in water temperature when another faucet is turned on in a different area of the home
Insulation
- Use wraps for the water heater lines to keep them insulated; do not use a wrap on your water heater tank
