FAQ

Are all water heater companies the same?

Before signing up for a new water heater, know who your service provider is and what you are signing up for.  Keep these questions in mind before you sign a new contract:

  1. What company do you represent?
  2. How long is the contract for?
  3. Are there charges to exit the contract if I’m not satisfied with the service?
  4. What is the size and experience level of your technician staff?
  5. How long have you been in the water heater business?

What should I do if I feel pressured to rent a water heater from a door-to-door company?

Do not feel pressured to sign a contract without fully understanding what you are signing up for.  If you feel pressure, ask the door to door salesperson to leave some information with you so you can review on your own time and make an informed decision.  If they don’t have anything to leave, ask them for their website so you can review online.  If you feel pressured, ask the salesperson to leave. If you feel threatened, ask them to leave and call the police if they do not immediately comply.

What if there’s an “exit fee” in my current contract with another provider?

Some providers charge their customers an exit fee for switching. If your contract with your current supplier levies such a fee, you may be obliged to pay it. The best way to protect your household from charges levied by other rental companies is to inform yourself with the facts and read the contract thoroughly before agreeing to the terms and signing.

How do I know it’s time to replace my water heater?

If you notice any of the following symptoms, it is time to call your service provider:

  • Rust colored hot water
  • Moisture around the base of the tank
  • Insufficient hot water

Can I change the size of my rental water heater at anytime?

Yes. You can rent a bigger or smaller water heater, depending on your household needs and subject to the terms of your contract with your provider. If you need more hot water or if there has been a change in family size or lifestyle, contact your service provider to find the best option for your needs.

How do I lower my water temperature?

It’s best you leave your temperature controls to the professionals.  Contact your water heater service provider and have a licensed technician come to your home and adjust the temperature for you.

Does lowering the temperature on my water heater save me money?

Yes, but if the heater is set too low it may lead to the production of bacteria.  As well, setting the temperature too high could lead to scalding.  Contact your service provider if you believe that your water temperature needs adjustment.

What is a “tankless” water heater?

“Tankless” water heaters can be called instantaneous or on-demand water heaters.  They are a relatively new type of water heating solution with many benefits, and potentially some drawbacks,  for the homeowner depending on their specific circumstances.

Benefits:

  • Constant  supply of hot water within the designed specifications of the unit
  • Only heat water when you turn your faucet on
  • Set the temperature to your exact comfort level
  • Wall-mounted design saves valuable floor space
  • Runs more quietly than your fridge
  • Increased energy efficiency, 82%+ range compared to 62% for standard tank water heaters

Potential Drawbacks:

  • May require larger diameter gas piping, which can result in additional installation expense
  • The units require more ongoing maintenance than a conventional storage tank water heater
  • The energy savings might not justify the additional expense to move to tankless technology (although these savings would increase should natural gas costs rise over time)
